About Us |
- Birds of Paradise Aviary is a
small home hobby aviary, breeding Red Sided Eclectus Parrots.
In addition to Eclectus parrots, I also have a pet Goffins Cockatoo
named "Ziggy",
and a baby Double Yellow Headed Amazon named "Gabriella"
- My name is Gail (Nelson)
Scovil, located in Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada.
- I purchased my first Red Sided
Eclectus
parrot "Indy", from a local pet shop in early 1995 at about
8 months of age. I knew absolutely nothing about parrots, but kept reading
whatever I could find and visited "Indy" in the pet shop on a
regular basis. For some reason
I found her irresistible.
- I brought her home, and as she
stepped out of the carrier, she said "Hello there"
to my little dog who was instantly very jealous and very shocked to hear
this intruder talk.
- As time went on, I felt Indy
must be lonesome, as at that time I worked and was away from home a lot of
the time. That is how the idea
of getting her a companion came about. Being worried that two females might
not get along, I decided to get a male Red Sided Eclectus, as then I would
have a red bird and a green bird. What
a beautiful pair! I
never dreamed they would actually breed, as I knew nothing about breeding or
raising parrots. Obviously,
Indy and Ollie thought they could handle it on their own.
- It took `forever` for
Indy to even acknowledge Ollie lived in the same house with us, but finally
they could share a play gym. About
a year and a half later, Indy decided she would just move in with Ollie.
Allowing Ollie into her cage was totally out of the question.
- Next thing I knew Indy was
scratching around in every corner of the house frantically looking for a
place to lay an egg.
- I remember being so excited
and calling family and friends announcing "Indy laid an egg".
One of my brothers was totally unimpressed and drawled out "So,
what do you want me to say now”.
- This is how I became a
breeder of Red Sided Eclectus parrots.
Now my biggest problem is trying to get Indy and Ollie to take a
break from having babies.
- The purpose of this web site
is to share with you knowledge I have gained over the past few years from
sharing my home, and my life, with parrots.
- Indy and Ollie are still pets
and want to be held and talked to every day. Now that they are continually
raising a family, they have lost some of their cuddly pet qualities, but
still want interaction with me on a daily basis. I sincerely hope this never ends. Indy wants to be held,
but has to rush back to her nest after about 3 minutes.
If I am lucky, I recognize the signs and she does not have to nip me
to let me know my time is up.
